Coming Events in Crete

Exhibitions at the Historical Museum of Heraklion

  1. An impressive exhibition of photographs by Nikos Psilakis, entitled Changing Faces. Burlesque Rituals in the Cretan Countryside, opened at the Historical Museum of Crete on 11 February. The exhibition focuses on the part of Nikos Psilakis’ major work of ethnological research which concerns folk rituals held during Carnival and Clean Monday. The photographer has recorded these rituals before they disappear forever, even in the villages, eclipsed by urban forms of “carnival” events. The exhibition will continue to 4 March.
  2. The major map exhibition Candia / Creta / Crete. Time and space. 16th-18th centuries, in collaboration with the National Bank Education Foundation (to 29 April 2006).
  3. The exhibition of the Costis Mamalakis Collection, Personal Items and other Equipment of Warfare, focusing on the Battle of Crete (to 31 May 2006).

Entrance is free. Opening times: Monday - Saturday: 09.00-14.30, Wednesday afternoons: 18:00-21:00

Carnival Festivities in Heraklion

The programme of festivities in Heraklion 2006 continue into March. After a good start with a treasure hunt for adults and children, and concerts of traditional and modern music, Greek opera and musical shows that have taken place in February, the upcoming events in March are:

  1. Wednesday 1st of March, in Plateia Eleftherias, from 6pm to 10pm: Apokries Party for the children of the town, featuring a procession of stilt-walkers the streets and a theatrical production from the Omma Theatrical Group, plus a music and dance programme with the Diesi folk group of Vagelis Bizarakis (7pm)
  2. Thursday 2nd of March: The Lykeio Hellinidon (The Women’s Lyceum of Greece) will lead the parade through the streets of Heraklion. Also, a performance by the choirs of Alatsatianon, Travellers of Tradition, Ionia Nightingale and mixed choir of the Town Hall of Heraklion, as well as the Pan-Cretan Artists Association of Cretan Music and a display from the Pan-Cretan Association of Dance Teachers.
  3. Friday 3rd of March in Vassiliki of Agios Markos, opposite Lion Square at 8pm: A performance by the Orchestra of the Municipality of Heraklion, offering excerpts from Greek operetta and international musicals. The featured solo tenor voice is George Psaroudakis and the soprano is Lena Hadzigeorgiou, with Leonidas Tzordzakis conducting.
  4. Kathari Deftera (Clean Monday) - Monday 6th March at 10am: The Nikos Kazantzakis Open-air Theatre will host a performance by the Pan-Cretan Artists Association of Musicians in a programme of traditional Cretan music, along with the above mentioned group of dance teachers. Food will be served, without meat of course, consisting of the traditional diet for this Clean Monday; halvas, olives, taramosalata, perhaps octopus and a delicious bread called lagana.

Don't forget the Carnival Festivities at Rethymnon, as well as the Carnival Parade in Malia on March 5.

Music Concert in March

Regarding to the great success of the concert “CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE AGES”, which took place at the Protestant church of Heraklion on December 10th, 2005 and at the Katholic Church on December 12th,2005, we are delighted to announce a future concert in March. Elections at Ierapetra

Elections at the Association ‘Filia ton Laon’. The election will be held at the meeting place of the association, above the old people’s home at Leivadia, Ierapetra at 7 pm on March 15, 2006. For more information contact Mrs. Teresa Lampe at 2842031088

Paintings without pen or paper

Exhibition of hand-made jewellery at the Gate of St George in Platia Elefterias, Heraklion, from 13th to 18th of March by Eirini Kokkinaki & Fabian Quiblier.
Uniquely designed jewellery produced through a wide range of different techniques, shapes melting into each other in a game of light and reflection.
New paintings from Maria Panderi and Nico Papadakis will also feature in the exhibition.

Arts Exhibition in Heraklion

From 22nd February to 5th of March in the Vasiliki of Agios Markos, opposite Lion Square, The Mosaic Workshop of the Municipality of Heraklion is staging an exhibition of the mosaic work of students and teachers.
