The Minoan harbour of Knossos

Further sections of the Minoan harbour of Knossos have been excavated in a plot in the Katsabas area of Heraklion. The excavation site is at the mouth of the Kairatos river, which flows through Knossos on its way to the sea.

In the Minoan harbour were found large parallel walls up to 23 cm long and 1 m thick, forming six large oblong spaces 6 m wide facing the sea. It is thought that similar structures, probably shipsheds, lie underwater in Heraklion harbour.

The Mayor of Heraklion stated that he would cooperate with the Archaeological Service and the Ministry of Culture in order to ensure that excavations continue, revealing the structures in full and opening the area to the public as an open-air museum.
