Under 2 million tourists in Crete this year

tourists at matala beach in creteFewer than 2,000,000 tourists are expected to visit Crete this year, compared to 2,700,000 last year. The huge drop in charter flights translates into losses of many millions of euros, the President of the Hotel-Owners' Union Nikiforos Lambrinos told the Patris newspaper yesterday.

The President of the Hotel-Owners' Union notes that there will be a drop in all tourist markets, British, German, Russian, etc. "We are waiting for the Berlin Exhibition in March for a fuller picture."

The drop in the British market will be particularly steep, ranging from 30 to 40%, while German arrivals are to fall by 15-20%.

Mr Lambrinos noted that those travelling this year will choose the cheapest destinations, such as Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and other destinations outside the Eurozone.

It is quite normal that a lot of tourists are not coming back to Crete or not coming at all. Crete has almost no updated hotels and the mentality of staff is sometimes negativ. A tourist nowadays is not a jackpot but some one earn by giving quality and decent service, 2 qualities you hardly find in Crete. Cretan business owners are only interested in the quick fix money. Cretans, travel around yourselves and visit the world, you will be surprised what is going on around you... . Hopefully you will learn and apply in your own country what you have seen abroad and then .... customers will for sure come back! Because Crete is a beauty. (From some one who loves Crete). PS : clean up the place as well, throw the dirt in the bins, not along the roads !!!!

I am visiting Crete this summer for my honeymoon and really looking forward to it. I'm glad the numbers of tourists has decreased because I don't like huge crowds.

These people who have made negative comments about Crete have obviously not had their eyes open !My husband and I have been visiting Crete at least 4 times a year for the past 11 years and will continue doing so as we love most things about Crete. The majority of locals are very friendly and the UK could learn a lot from Greek morals !

I like when Crete when there are less tourists. I have visited Crete every summer since 1995, and even worked over summers. I also have noticed that greek want \"all money now\" and they let it show how they dislike foreigner and greeks from the continent. That is their nature.

we have visited crete for the last few years, mostly twice a year and will continue to do so. We do prefer the west side as not comercialised and love Hania and surrounding areas. Kalyves is our favourite as its a traditional working village with plenty of local tavernas and also a lovely beach and interesting harbour
