Kayak races in Lake Kournas
The Nautical Club in Chania and the Greek Association of Canoe – Kayak in association with the Municipality of Georgioupolis, organizes in October every year the Koressia Canoe Kayak races in Lake Kournas. Leading names of the rowing sport from all over Greece and Cyprus took place in the race organized this year.
Lake Kournas is considered an ideal place for flat water canoe – kayak races, a fact that combined with the given experience of the organizers has ensured success all these years both on the organizing and the actual racing level.
The event is of significant importance to the Municipality of Georgioupolis and the Nautical Club of Chania and gives the sport a boost in the region.
During the 8th Koressia Canoe Kayak Sprinting races the Nautical Club of Chania won 16 medals in total (4 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals).
The races took place on the 18th and 19th of October 2009 in Kournas Lake, with the participation of 160 athletes from 12 Clubs in Greece and athletes from five clubs in Cyprus. Forty athletes of the Nautical Club of Chania participated in the events, confirming with their performance that N.C of Chania is among the three top clubs in Greece.
One of the strongest points of the event was ( the ardency and) eagerness of the athletes and the great races that took place. Along with the friends of the sport, many foreigners and visitors attended the impressive spectacle in Kournas Lake. Many tourists were inspired and rented kayaks in order to participate to the event, on their own way.
