The music event in Crete: 7th Casa dei Mezzo, 24 –29 June 2010
The international music festival Casa dei Mezzo, taking place in Makry Gialos is celebrating its 7th year, promising new exciting musical moments in southern Crete.
The fame of the festival has surpassed the borders of the small village of Makry Gialos in south-eastern Crete and opened its wings for the Wingmore Hall in London 2008, and other festivals in Heraklion and Athens.
This year, the festival will be recorded and sent to EBU (European Broadcasting Union) by ERT in order to be transmitted to Europe via radio.
We welcome this year the Prefecture Authority of Lassithi as a co-organizer and the Embassy of Norway and the Norwegian Institute of Athens, as the main sponsors of the festival and we hope to contribute to the establishment of strong bonds of music cooperation between Greece and Norway.
As in every year, the Casa dei Mezzo music festival hosts artists from all over the world. This year, the festival opens right next to the harbor of Makry Gialos with a children concert by the students of the music School “Fragkiskos Leontaridis”.
The same night there is a traditional music concert with the violinist Vaggelis Vardakis and his group that will accompany the dancing groups of Kroustas and Ierapetra dancing forgotten Cretan dances.
All events of the festival will continue to the Casa dei Mezzo, except for the noon concert on June 26th that will take place in Etia, in the old Venetian Villa of de Mezzo.
The Schedule of the Festival Casa dei Mezzo
One night is dedicated to the works of Greek composers played by solely Greek artists.
Since 2009, when the Trio dei Mezzo was established, the band has given numerous concerts in Europe, receiving great reviews. This year, in order to honor the 200 years since the birth of Robert Schumann the band will play his work for a Piano Trio in D minor.
Except for Robert Schumann though, this year we celebrate two more birthdays: of Frederic Chopin and Ole Bull. Apostolos Palios (piano) will play four ballads by Chopin, and Marko Pop Ristov will travel us to the mountains of Norway playing Bull.
We are also hosting once more, the Norwegian pianist Sveinung Bjelland, who will play for us the piece of Robert Schumann Fantasie op17, before travelling to Berlin to record the same piece from Simax. The Italian guitarist Emanuele E Forni will play the lute solo and will accompany the Norwegian mezzo-soprano Hege Høisæter. Another guitarist, Kostas Makrygiannakis will enchant us with pieces of Couperin , Tedesco ,Towner and his own.
The Festival Casa dei Mezzo is unique not only in Crete, but also in the rest of Greece, because it offers music of unique quality to its visitors, while allowing him to enjoy the beautiful Cretan beaches and the amazing cuisine of Southeastern Crete.
