“Super granny” in Crete

“I wasn’t scared of anything. I fought hard and I could even have killed her,” said the indignant 68-year-old owner of a petrol station in Voni, who fought off an armed woman who tried to rob her. Mrs Anna Fragiadoulaki managed to save the cash in the till, fiercely resisting the robber and even trying to immobilise her. All the thief got away with was the 150 euros the owner was holding at the time, some mobile phone cards and cigarettes.

The two women came face-to-face at the scene of the robbery in Voni, Heraklion, the night before last. The young foreign woman in black, who entered the petrol station armed with a gun, met her match as the 68-year-old resisted in every possible way and managed to save the money in the till. The robber’s accomplices had appeared earlier, pretending to be customers. After filling their car they signalled to the young woman, who approached the 68-year-old asking to use the telephone. However, the 68-year-old Supergran was determined not to share her day’s takings with the crooks. In spite of the fact that the foreign woman knocked her down and threatened her with the gun, she resisted and managed to hide the keys to the till in her clothing. Mrs Fragiadoulaki didn’t even hesitate to try and hold onto the thief, who only managed to snatch the 150 euros the older woman was holding, mobile phone cards and cigarettes.

The battle, however, was not yet over, as the 68-year-old’s son, who heard her cries for help, chased after the woman, who managed to get into the getaway car and escape.

The 68-year-old Supergran was determined not to share the day’s takings with the crooks. The case is being investigated by the Kastelli Police Station, while the criminals were still being sought late last night.

“I thought about shutting the door and locking her in until my son could get there, he’d send her to hospital in an ambulance. At the same time I was afraid that the man outside might kill me. I wasn’t scared of anything. I fought hard and I could even have killed her,” said the 68-year-old

“She tried to get the gun which she’d dropped on the floor for a moment and I took the chance to grab the keys. As she got into the car she nearly fell and my son grabbed her, but the others inside the car pulled her in and he didn’t manage to hang on to her.”
