world animal day 2009 in heraklion, creteHeraklion – 25 September, 2009 – On 10th October, the Cretan Animal Welfare Group (CAWG) is organizing various events in order to celebrate World Animal Day 2009. For the first time in collaboration with 14 other associations of protection of animals from all Crete, we organise a celebration of relation of persons with the animals!

The events will take place at the Lotzia in Heraklion from 11.00-17.00 and will consist of animal welfare information stands, free face painting for children, drawing competition (every child handing in a drawing will receive a small gift), guide dog and training demonstrations. In addition Actress Anna Tsoykala and Marley (our dog mascot) will be there and children and adults can have their pictures taken by a professional photographer and have them signed by Anna. Raffle tickets will also be on sale and people can win prizes such as a laptop (courtesy of Info) and digital photo camera (courtesy of Fotomaris).

The charities have chosen the theme of celebration in recognition that animals help us daily and giving joy as domestic pets or helping us as animals of service. People find happiness and companionship from a wide range of pets. Animals also assist people in need from guide dogs for the blind to rescue dogs in disaster situation as well as in use against crime.

Information about Cretan Animal Welfare Group

cretan animal welfareThe Cretan Animal Welfare Group (CAWG) was established and registered in 1995 to provide care for the animals in need. It rejects the notion that human and animal welfare should be treated differently. Instead they believe that the fate of animals and the environment in which they live are inextricably linked to our own. For many years the CAWG has saved, rescued many sick, injured and abandoned animals – animals now enjoying safe and caring homes across Europe.
CAWG is non-profit association that is based on voluntary work of citizens. With the passage of time, the association changed his policy from the rescue and the care of animals in order to refocus resources and efforts to maximize the benefits and to create long term solutions for a better future for animals.
The key projects that will receive the highest priority are:

  • Subsidised Neutering of Owned Dogs
  • Humane Education (school visits and training)
  • Campaigning (Stop Circus Suffering & Good Egg Awards)
  • Donkey Project
  • Cat Cafes & Cat Catch-Neuter-Release

CAWG believe that these primarily preventative projects contribute to sustainable solutions and long term changes.

“Working towards a better future for the animals of Crete and beyond”.
